New Zealand Trout Fishing on the North Canterbury Lakes - Lake Coleridge

Lake Coleridge, running 18km long and covering just over 3,500ha, is the largest and most heavily fished lake in North Canterbury. It supports one of very few New Zealand populations of landlocked Chinook salmon, which are the most common catch in the lake. New Zealand brown and rainbow trout are also abundant although rainbow trout tend to be more “catchable”.

Opening Weekend (the first Saturday in November) is a big event with hundreds of anglers on the lake and lots of fish being caught. There are many well-known fishing areas around Lake Coleridge.

The most common catch is the rare Chinook salmon. Trout are hard to spot so blind fishing is necessary, usually along the eastern shoreline. In calm, bright conditions you might spot trout in some of the smaller lakes just to the east of Lake Coleridge.
The season runs from November to the end of April.
