Lake Taupo is New Zealand's largest fresh water Crater Lake located in the centre of the North Island. At the Southern end of Lake Taupo is the mineral rich Tongariro River responsible for many of the world's most memorable angling experiences.
This New Zealand fishery offers steelhead style fishing in the winter months and dry fly fishing in the summer months and is consistently voted in the top five wild fresh water fisheries in the world. When you fish Lake Taupo, you soon find out why.
Experience wilderness fishing travelling by helicopter or four wheel drive motor vehicle into remote isolated stretches of New Zealand backwaters' of the Kaweka, Kaimanawa and Urewera ranges. The Ngaruroro, Rangitikei and Mohaka, produce excellent quality brown and rainbow trout of trophy size. Nymph or wet fly.
Suggested equipment includes: eight or nine weight 9 ft rods with weight forward floating and sinking lines are recommended, as are thermal or neoprene waders with felt soled boots in winter. During the summer fishing months lightweight Gortex waders and wading boots are recommended. Dry flies and nymphs are used during the warmer Summer months on crystal clear stony bedded rivers.
