Northwest of Lake Waikaremoana lies Lake Waikareiti. Access to Lake Waikareiti is by foot along a well marked and maintained Department of Conservation (DOC) walking track commencing approximately 400m (440 yards) from the Department of Conservation Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre on the Rotorua - Waikaremoana Road (S.H. 38).
The walk to the lake takes approximately 1 hour and requires a moderate level of fitness but is definitely worth the effort for the opportunity to fish in pristine surroundings and the rewarding wild rainbow trout that the lake offers.
Non-motorized dinghies are available for hire to troll or fly-fish from. The Summer months are the best time for shoreline fly-fishing. Located at the Eastern end of the lake is Sandy Bay Hut offering the option of overnight wilderness camping or pleasant resting spot for a bite of lunch. Trout landed at Lake Waikareiti average 1.5 kilograms (3.30 pounds) and are of excellent condition.
