Lake Waikaremoana

Lake Waikaremoana (pronounced “Why carry more Arna) a Maori name translated to English meaning “sea of rippling waters” is the largest lake in Te Urewera National Park. Formed by a massive landslide 2000 years ago, Lake Waikaremoana falls to a depth of 248 metres deep (813 ft).

At the South Eastern end of the catchment water is channeled down into the smaller Lakes of Kaitawa and Whakamarino generating electricity as it goes. Kaitawa and Whakamarino known to produce some exceptionally large trophy fish. Since the first liberation of Brown and Rainbow trout in 1896 the fish have flourished in the pristine clear waters of the lake offering anglers excellent shoreline fly-fishing and lake trolling opportunities.

Spinning from the shore may also be productive, as can harling a fly in shallow areas. Mid-October through until mid-June is recommended for fishing brown trout, which average 2 kilograms in weight (4.4 pounds). Larger fish weighing up to 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) are sometimes taken too.
The four major rivers, which flow into Lake Waikaremoana, are Hopuaruahine, Mokau, Aniwaniwa and Korokorowhaitiri. With peek fishing from April, anglers can experience the exciting fishing these rivers have to offer.

Lake Waikaremoana is surrounded by Te Urewera National Park with native fauna of the dense rain forest falling from the heights of the Panekiri Range down to every corner of the lake shoreline. Very little commercial development has taken place in the Tuhou strong hold since man first discovered it. Modest lakeside accommodation is available with Guide or public huts and cabins. Other activities are available including tramping (hiking), hunting, horse trekking, golf, scenic boat rides or take the time to visit the Department of Conservation information centre to read up on some of the local history.
