The Waiau River is the most northern of the major rivers in the North Canterbury District, New Zealand and receives the least fishing pressure. The Waiau River is the only major river in the region without good access to the mouth. Access involves either a long walk or a ten-minute jet boat ride. Vehicle access to both sides of the river mouth is possible but involves a long drive over private land.
