Out of the South-Eastern corner of Te Urewera National Park runs the Waiau River, another major Wairoa River contributory. The Waiau River is an excellent fishing stream offering large numbers of smaller fish. The upper reaches support the best fishing offering high numbers of both brown and rainbow trout with regular angler reports of high catch rates. Fish caught weighing in the 1 to 2.5kg ranges (up to 5.5 pounds).

Summer dry fly and nymph fishing can be very productive. The wilderness backdrop makes it a very beautiful river to fish. Access to the upper reaches of the Waiau is restricted by terrain and is limited to trampers (hiking) or 4x4 Motor vehicle
