One hour's drive from Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand is the Waimakariri River, another majestic braided River, it is the longest and most extensively fished waterway in Canterbury. It silently runs its course from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. In the upper headwaters crystal clear water can be fished testing the skill of the most skilled angler spotting the elusive New Zealand trout. The Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers are similar in many aspects during salmon runs with anglers frequenting the Waimakariri due to its close proximity to Christchurch. In fact the Waimakariri is the most heavily used recreational river in the South Island. The Waimakariri River has good salmon fishing during the season and also has good runs of sea run brown trout.

The mouth of the river where it meets the Pacific Ocean is popular for salmon and kahawai fishermen. The south side of the mouth is accessed on motorbike or by four-wheel drive vehicle.
