Is life two boaring?

It was late September and Spring was slowly starting to shake off the last grasps of Winter. I had been suffering from a bad case of cabin fever and a severe lack of hunting. So one quiet Sunday afternoon I took the opportunity to spend some time with my three oldest boys and take a drive through a local forest block.

Despite what the picture shows I was targeting goats. A hunter this year had shot a nice trophy goat but wanted a multi coloured head skin. There are literally thousands of goats and shooting dozens of them in an afternoon is not unrealistic. But decide to shot a multi coloured Billy was an order I was finding hard to fill. But that's another story.

During this drive we had earlier spotted a mob of 14 pigs with a couple of handy sized boars. They were a good trek away and with 3 boys, the youngest aged only 4 years, the pigs were safe. We weren't to be disappointed when a short drive further down the track had me pulling on the hand brake and reaching for the Remington. There rooting on the side of road were two good sized pigs.

I gave a fleeting command for the kids to stay in the truck as I threw lead at one of the startled porkers racing over the road. Damn I missed, or so I thought. I quickly ran to a vantage point overlooking a lower lying flat and managed to squeeze a more relaxed shot away. This time the bullet finding its' target with the pig collapsing to the ground.

By this stage the boys were leaping out of their skin and the truck. Excitement was evident by their wide ear to ear smiles. "Did you get it dad?" was the chorus.

A scene examination found a pool of blood, which lead a short trail to where the first pig lay. High fives all round, a quick job with gutting, photographs and then we were homeward bound with eager hunters to tell their mother the whole story -10 times each.

This was a great Sunday afternoon drive made all the more special to be able to spend it with my boys.
